Telecocooning... You may be living it...
Do you recall the movie Coocon, a big hit in the 1980’s? If you do so maybe the remembrance of the movie story can allow you to associate the term Telecocooning with that film ... The word Coocon is used to say that people are living a life of very low social interaction and its association with The term Tele is directly related to the Information and Communication Technologies, from the computer and the Internet until the cell phone...
And what does that mean? Telecocooning is a phenomenon that is found in various parts of the world that happens in the following way, people living in remote and distant areas often get to know and start relationships with other people through technology and spend the whole day together using their work, entertainment and communication equipments.
In Japan, for example, this is already happening with great frequency among youngsters and adolescents. They establish friendships through virtual networks [such as Orkut or MySpace] and communicate with this friends through MSN, torpedoes, Skype, cell phone or through any other means enabling them to be in direct contact with each another by lines of digital communication.
And why is there such an association with cocoons? Because many of these people are living behind their personal lives on the real world in favor of contacts almost exclusively digital... They badly communicate with relatives, do not create real bonds of friendship with people in their schools or jobs, have some resistance to physical contact, cannot establish intimate relationships in the context in which they live...
Yeah, maybe I am turning out to be really a dinosaur...
